To do all things for God and country in a manner marked by Excellence..Spirit..Service. This is the core of the Ateneo de Zamboanga University's Jesuit education. The years that passed are witness to the growth of the university both in competence and size.

Through its humble beginnings that date back to 1912, Ateneo, then called Escuela Catolica, began serving the community by educating the youth and forming in them the values of Jesus Christ as lived out by St. Ignatius of Loyola. In 1916, Escuela Catolica, finally named Ateneo de Zamboanga, gave rise to what we now know as the century-old tradition of Jesuit education.

From its first high school graduates in 1932, to the establishment of the college and graduate school in 1952 and 1974 respectively, to its conferment as university in 2001, and now to its expansion to its newest campus in Bgy. Tumaga, this City, the Ateneo de Zamboanga University continues to prove itself as a fully dynamic educational institution gearing up in its mission to continuously offer academic excellence, better service to the community and highly motivated spirit in effecting change in the City, the region, and the country.

THE CAMPUS AT TUMAGA

In line with its continued efforts to offer quality Jesuit education to students in the region, the Ateneo de Zamboanga University breaks new ground for its new High School Campus in Barangay Tumaga, Zamboanga City.

The project site is about 6 kilometers from the present La Purisima Campus, and is directly accessible from two main routes, namely the Maria Clara Lobregat National Highway (formerly Zamboanga City - Pagadian City National Highway) through Barangay Putik leading to Tumaga-Lunzuran Road; and through Governor Camins to Veterans Extension that connects to Bgy. Tumaga Road. The total campus area is 8.3 hectares. (click here to view Site Development Plan)

The blessing and groundbreaking ceremonies were held on July 30, 2005. Most Rev. Carmelo DF Morelos, DD, Archbishop of Zamboanga, officiated the blessing rites. The Zamboanga City Mayor Hon. Celso L. Lobregat, Vice-Mayor Ma. Isabelle G. Climaco together with City councilors were present to witness the occasion. Tumaga barangay captain Mr. Rodolfo M. Bayot, and other local government officials, members of the ADZU Board of Trustees, University officials, faculty, staff, students, parents, alumni, and friends attended the event.

As the University envisioned, the event became a gathering of members of its community, friends and supporters -- people who are known to be the stakeholders and friends of the university, co-owners and participants in its endeavors and dreams.

By June 2006, the new High School campus will be operational. After a few more years, the Grade School unit will also transfer to this same site, and so shall follow other structures to transform this site into a complete basic education campus (click Site Development Plan).

This transfer has long been awaited. Transferring the basic education to a new site is envisioned to meet the functional requirements of land use, open spaces, facilities, and technologies without sacrificing the environment and the ability to learn, interact and grow.

With the increasing number of enrollees of the High School every year and the impressive record of academic excellence in various fields, the new site shall pave the way for a better learning environment for the young women and men of Zamboanga.
DESIGN AND CONSTRUCTION

The new Ateneo Campus will sport a modern look while retaining elements that are typical of Jesuit schools. It will try to keep hold of nuances of Western Mindanao, thus capitalizing the significant value of its location. The structures in this new campus still contain touches and details of the old buildings, only this time, utilizing modern and new finishes.

The site offers a panoramic view of the Abong-Abong and the hills of Zamboanga. Ultimately, the design aims to replicate the essential elements inspiring most prominent academic campuses in the country to have a spacious environment conducive for learning and personal development.

The construction of the High School Building just started in mid July this year. The contractor for site development and civil works is Archipelago Builders Inc., owned and operated by Engr. Paulino Pe, ADZU's own alumnus, valedictorian of Ateneo High School batch '51.

The designer and planner is Arch. Manuel Lim III whose mother is from Zamboanga, and who received his basic education in another Jesuit school, the Sacred Heart School in Cebu. He finished his undergraduate and graduate degrees from the University of the Philippines, Diliman, Quezon City.

The project manager for Ateneo is Engr. Rodel Tarabi, Ateneo de Zamboanga High School alumnus batch '82.

Work continues as would be regularly seen in the updates on construction.
